Professional Biography / Training: I have been a consultant microbiologist at UCLH since 1990. I advise on treatment of infection throughout the Trust particularly critical care units and the Heart Hospital and on control of infection in Camden and Islington.
I am in charge of the wound surveillance programme for the hospital which collects information on any wound infections patients develop after surgery and feeds back to the surgeons to encourage reduction in rates. I have been closely involved in projects to control and reduce MRSA infection, particularly rapid patient screening for MRSA.
I am involved in the Department of Health MRSA Improvement Team and participates in a number of Department of Health Committees. I helped design infection resistant features into the new UCLH building and a new computer keyboard for ward areas.
I am an honorary senior lecturer at UCL and honorary consultant at Whittington Hospital. With Dr Geoff Bellingan and Prof M Singer, I lead a major Department of Health study into the effect of environmental cleaning on infection rates.
I am also chair of the Specialty Training Committee for Microbiology for London and an editor on Journal of Hospital Infection and Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.
